Who We Are

Patterson Thoma Family Office is a privately held family investment company founded in 1982. Our objective is to invest in established funds and management teams who can efficiently deploy capital and provide an exceptional rate of return. Our experienced team utilizes our vast network of partners and associates to captivate great business opportunities. While we prefer direct investment opportunities, we will also consider partnering alongside operators in established funds with a concentrated focus.

Frequently Asked Questions

We believe good people drive good investments. We invest in many sectors with Private Equity, Real Estate and Specialty Finance as our primary focus. Within each, we have additional criteria but consider us generalist investors. We like “story” deals that create unique investment opportunities, where our skillset may be leveraged to drive value for our partners.

We do not invest in cannabis or crypto. We also avoid consumer products, food and beverage, capital-intensive companies, highly cyclical companies, and commodity-based companies.

We do invest in Oil & Gas under limited circumstances, but we specifically avoid direct exploration, production projects, and other areas of high risk.

Yes, we work with companies to solve capital needs, including equity or debt solutions. Examples of debt solutions may include working capital loans or purchase order loans. Our debt return expectations would be higher than one would anticipate from a bank partner.
Although we consider ourselves passive, we will actively participate in certain situations where the opportunity merits it. We consider ourselves allocators with strong operating relationships. Some companies only need capital and that is fine with us, but for companies that require more, we bring in relationship partners.
Yes, but we only partner with companies that have achieved revenue success, through proven market demand for their companies.
Absolutely, we are currently Co-GP on several opportunities where our history and expertise makes us valuable to the larger investor base. We are happy to consider both LP and GP opportunities with you.
We support leaders with great ideas and strong team building skills. A history of success is preferred but not required; however, a history of hard work, hands on experience and integrity is critical.
In addition to debt or equity capital, we are available to assist across the various functions of a business. We have experienced accounting and finance team members and a deep roster of industry contacts, sales executives, board members, co-investors, etc.

As long as it makes sense. We are firm believers in Milestone Investing. Some companies achieve success with a single round of funding, but some companies follow a different path, and their capital needs may change over time. We work with each company to provide the right amount of capital and structure given the current needs of the company. In some instances, we have participated in many rounds of investments with a company – including some that are now publicly traded.

Absolutely. Sometimes we act as a sole funding source; sometimes we assume the role as Lead Investor assisting the company with their larger financing. Other times we are a happy LP investor in the backseat.

From $100k to $20M. Let’s discuss what you need, and we will solve it together.

No. We are less focused on our exact ownership percentage but do intend that our investment is Meaningful Capital to the company and operator. We appreciate frequent and open communication with our partners.

While we like to meet with our Texas and South-Central U.S. partners frequently, we are open to investments in out-of-state companies. We do not invest in international companies.

GTF Energy, LLC dba Railhead Rentals

Patterson Thoma partnered with another family office originally to provide growth capital for an extended stay housing provider in West Texas. At the request of the operator, we eventually purchased the entire enterprise. Investors have realized a 14% IRR to date and continue to receive monthly cash flow distributions from operations. Patterson Thoma maintains its role in operations, marketing, accounting, and investor reporting and compliance.

Compaction Technologies

Respecting the operator’s desire to maintain 100% of his company’s equity, our team structured a solution for the trash compactor manufacturer via the financing of their lease agreements with their customers. This accelerated the company’s cash flow and relieved them of servicing the leases. We provided $5MM+ in financing for the company and successfully placed the portfolio with a leading operator in the space less than one year after the initial lease purchase.

Adaptive 3D Technologies

In active support of a UT Dallas professor, Patterson Thoma was the first seed investor in a 3D-manufacturing company. As applications of the technology across multiple industries grew, Patterson Thoma participated in the Series A round, and in year four of the investment, advised the company through an exit via a SPAC (Ticker: DM). We maintain a good relationship with the founders and have subsequently invested in their next venture.

Anchor Workforce Industrial

Patterson Thoma partnered with a local DFW operator, focused on industrial warehouse sites. Together we have successfully acquired, refurbished, and leased a growing portfolio. We continue to actively pursue new opportunities.

Teladoc Health

Patterson Thoma was an early investor in Teladoc Health (Ticker: TDOC). We participated in numerous pre-IPO funding rounds, including equity investments and convertible notes.

NCA Loans

We have partnered with a prominent debt servicing firm in Dallas, TX to lead the capital formation of multiple debt portfolios yielding monthly cash flow with our co-investors. We have deployed over $30MM+ of the ~$100MM+ in the strategy. We are excited about future opportunities in the rounds.

McKinney Fund

Patterson Thoma is a GP in the real estate fund focused on Multi-Family, Senior Living, & Student Housing developments. We have partnered with the State of Texas as a limited partner for more than a decade and currently have over $500MM in Assets under Management. We typically deploy $5M-$15M in equity with developers.

Cariloop

Patterson Thoma initially invested in a pre-series A convertible note, later becoming the lead investor of the Series A round. Our team remains active in the company and holds a board seat. We proudly report that shortly a year after the Series A round, the company raised a Series B round at 4x the initial valuation.
